Following the gangs of Mumbai

Haseena Parker’s son-in-law Zubair takes us through an expose of the underwold in his debut film He grew up in the heartland of the underworld. And for a day Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parker’s son-in-law Zubair Khan’s eyes became our lens into the dark and dangerous gang world. It was surreal walking down the eerie streets of Chor Bazaar and Nagpada, as Zubair shot his expose on the underworld in his debut film Lakeer Ke Fakeer. As we arrived at Chindi Galli in Chor Bazaar, we sat at a bike spare parts shop. And it was very clear to the people that crowded the streets that we were foreigners to the area. While they stared at us suspiciously, they seemed rather acclimatised to the dangerously volatile environment. Zubair then told us that it’s only because of his connections to the people and the place that he has been able to shoot at ground zero of the underworld. He explained, “Being born and raised in the Do Taki area, I have been surrounded by it all. I have seen many films based on the underworld. From Ramu’s films to others, I have utmost respect for these filmmakers. But what they have depicted is nothing compared to what I will be showing. We are shooting at the actual places where all the underworld dons have rose to their stardom in the underworld like Pakmodia Street, Arab ka Bangla, Aafia mansion, Imam Wada and other such areas. I don’t think anyone has ever been able to shoot at places that I have, as everyone here knows me. It is easier for me, as they all are my friends. In fact, Ram Gopal Varma tried to shoot his film Department but was not allowed to.” The on-location shoot, however, revealed far more of the underworld than what the dingy area suggested. Zubair revealed that his film would expose the code language that the gangs employ. Just then, the film’s lead actor, Ayaz Khan, introduced us to a 68- year old man nicknamed Aapa Chacha. Aapa lived his entire life in close quarters with some of the biggest dons in the country. And so, Zubair got Aapa to prepare Ayaz for his character Fakeer Khan, based on the dreaded gangster Samhad Khad who was infamous for his antics in Bhindi Bazaar and was killed in a police encounter. While we were still reeling from the stories that Aapa’s face alone told, we followed the crew to a small chowki. The film, which is based on three boys who are exploited by the cops, the underworld, as well as politicians, also stars Vicky Ahuja and Javed Hyder.

Sanju to remake Telugu hit

Even before the release of his first home production Rascals, Sanjay Dutt has already started planning for his next venture. Dutt has bought the remake rights of the 2007 Telugu blockbuster Dhee that starred Vishnu Vardhan Babu and Genelia D’Souza in the lead. Rascals producer Sanjay Ahluwalia and Vinay Choksey have bought the rights of the south Indian film and they have signed Indra Kumar to direct the project. Sanjay Dutt’s business manager Dharam Oberoi and close friend Rafi Kazi will also co-produce the film. When contacted, Dharam Oberoi confirmed the news and said, “Rafi Kazi suggested that we buy the rights of Dhee. We loved the idea. It is an expensive film but we are keen on remaking it.” “We’ve signed Indra Kumar since it’s a romcom with a little bit of action thrown in. Sanju has already given it a go ahead. We have to cast two more lead actors and the female lead for the film. We will start the project in March next year. It was nice of Indra Kumar to have accepted the film since he has not made a single film outside his own banner in the last 15 years,” added Oberoi.

Akshay Kumar's party secrets

KJo surprised all, Riteish-Genelia went public, Russell Peters turned DJ and the media had a ball on Wednesday night To welcome Russell Peters and Vinay Virmani to Bollywood, Akshay Kumar and wife Twinkle Khanna threw a big bash at their Juhu residence. What began as a last minute plan of a party for close friends and family became a big media event for all tinsel townies. The guest list included Akki's close friends Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder, Sajid Nadiadwala, Bipasha Basu, his Joker co-star Sonakshi Sinha, his Thank You co-star Sonam Kapoor, Vickey Oberoi, Gayatri Joshi and many more. The surprise package at the party was however Karan Johar. The filmmaker, known for his proximity to the King Khan, who in turn happens to be Akshay's on-screen rival surprised many by being a part of the celebrations. Incidentally, KJo is a close friend of Akki's wife Twinkle Khanna, which explained his presence at their Juhu residence. Goldie Behl and Sonali Bendre's presence at the party raised a few eyebrows as well. But then a source from the party explained that Goldie and Akshay had been friends since Akshay worked with the filmmaker in Angaarey, a Goldie Behl home production. Also, one may recall the many times Sonali Bendre had played Akki's leading lady in films like Tarazu. Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D'Souza who went public about their relationship at a recent awards function, came for the party together, perhaps for the first time ever. The real fun started when the guest of honour Russel Peters doubled up as the DJ and everyone, including a pregnant Lara Dutta, who had come with her husband Mahesh Bhupathi, hit the dance floor. And even Akshay Kumar who believes in the saying 'early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy wealthy and wise', danced till the wee hours of the morning. The most interesting part about this impromptu party was the special arrangements made by Akshay for the media. A special buffet dinner was served for all the guests from the media with proper seating arrangements. There was even a covered area for photographers to safeguard them from rain. And all this was unique because other stars are just happy to keep the media standing outside the gate of their residence, fighting for a picture.

Sush is back in business

She’ll play the role of a diva based on Rekha in Kapil Sharma's next On May 17, Mumbai Mirror had reported that Anil Sharma's younger brother Kapil Sharma is making his directorial debut with Sitaare. Then Kapil Sharma had told Mumbai Mirror, "Yes, I am making a film on a controversial actress who has been an ex number one in the industry. However, I am not comfortable talking about it now. All I can say is that the film is called Sitaare and has the backdrop of Bollywood. "It is a story that I wanted to tell. I have been an industry kid and I want to unveil the mystery behind the actress. It is the journey of the actress, which is so interesting and colourful. It is her iconic career, her relationships and the ups and downs in her life," he further added. Reportedly, Kapil was in talks with Rani Mukerji and Sridevi for the lead role but it didn't work out. The latest is that our very own ex-Miss Universe Sushmita Sen will make her comeback to acting with the very film. A source confirmed, "Yes, Sushmita has been approached and she has liked the script. She is positively interested in the film. Over the past couple of years, she has dedicated her time to her personal affairs. Now, she will have to prepare for the transition to her professional life." Rumour has it that the film is based on Rekha's life. A source said, "There are roles of a senior actress, an actress in her mid-thirties and a couple of actresses from the younger lot. It is an eclectic mix of characters with different personalities. It is not based on Rekha's life but it has elements of her personality certainly. She is a mystery and hence, so attractive even today. It is a completely fictional story." When asked whether Sushmita Sen is playing the main role of a diva, Kapil Sharma said, "Sushmita is a diva and everyone would love to work with her. Apart from that, I really don't want to comment on anything." Interestingly, when contacted Sushmita Sen denied the story while, Kapil Sharma maintained his stance.
